On January 1st, the borough ban on single-use plastic bags and straws will start to be enforced. Additionally stores will be required to charge 10 cents per paper bag given to a customer.
The BID pushed hard to have the language in the single-use plastic bag and straw ordinance changed to allow stores to decide whether or not they wanted to charge 10-cents per paper bag given to a customer. Council did not fully agree with this request. Instead, they agreed to exempt delivery or takeout items from the fee. However, if a store has an in person sale of merchandise they will be required to charge 10-cents per paper bag.
The ordinance does not apply to product packaging or bags used to wrap raw food products, such as produce, cheese and meats.
Businesses with unique challenges may request an exemption by petitioning the Borough’s Sustainability Committee.
