This week we sat down with Akain Rowland who is the co-owner of Scoops ‘N’ Smiles. Scoops ‘N’ Smiles is located 6 East Gay Street.
Tell me about your store and any particular things you believe make it unique.
We opened our first store in Malvern 6 years ago, and recently opened our store in West Chester right before the pandemic. Previously, I served in the military, was a nurse, and then worked in the corporate world before I left to start Scoops and Smiles. Initially, I wanted to open the store in Charlotte, but ended up in Malvern then West Chester. For me, it is about the experience and getting back to the old days where people could have a relationship with the owners of the mom and pop stores, and I use that to build the business.
What do you love most about being located in West Chester?
Until recently, because of our opening right before the pandemic, we have not been able to experience the community of West Chester. Getting to know the surrounding community over the past few months of finally being open has been amazing. West Chester, to me, feels like a city, there is a lot of traffic, but there are many locals as well, which makes it unique.
What can you tell me about the culture or atmosphere of your store?
For both my staff and customers I make sure they put themselves first when it is important. Especially with many of my employees being in high school and college, it is important to realize that this is a stepping stone in their lives, and I try to build them up for what is coming after. I believe that when you treat your employees and customers right, they will do the same in return, and make a great environment.
Do you have any promotions/ events you would like me to share?
In addition to our two store fronts, we also have an ice cream truck for catering weddings, parties, and other events.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your store?
Come stop in and say hi!
