West Chester PA -- West Chester University (WCU) has launched a community service project focused on cleaning the sidewalks within the West Chester Business Improvement District (BID) for this spring.

Called Operation Clean Streets, it is a weekly event coordinated with West Chester University’s Off-Campus & Commuter Services (OCCS) and the West Chester BID.

"We have all our Sundays scheduled for this project through April 24," said Sandra A. Jones, Director of OCCS at West Chester University. "Each organized student group of volunteers are committing at least two hours of service during a designated Saturday or Sunday."

The first group to participate was WCU's Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity last Sunday morning.

"This is a great cooperative event between WCU and the downtown," said Fred Gusz, a member of the BID Board of Directors. "We truly appreciate the students' efforts to help us keep the downtown area free from litter."

The only complaint was heard from a participating student: "There's way too many cigarette butts on the sidewalk."

We hear you.
