Main Line Today selects West Chester's "Best Of"
July 1, 2014 | Malcolm Johnstone
West Chester PA -- In the July issue of Main Line Today magazine, 13 downtown businesses were recognized as the Best of. Congratulations to each of them.
Here's what MLT had to say:
Best Gourmet Market
Carlino’s Specialty Foods
"Carlino’s unparalleled inventory includes deli meats, sausages, crusty breads, oil-cured olives, dried figs, sun-dried tomatoes, handmade pasta, sauces, over 40 olive oils and balsamic vinegars, sweets, and more. Take away house-made meals, or easily assemble your own. Catering is also available."
Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant
"Even as it continues to expand, Iron Hill has maintained an impressive consistence in food and service. Brewers at each location are free to focus on their favorites, which regularly leads to awards and a few pleasant surprises to keep things interesting."
Best Date Night Dining
"This unassumingly romantic family-owned BYOB dabbles in a delectable, though hardy eccentric, mix of Lebanese and Italian cuisines. Menu highlights include shrimp scampi, a beef kabob platter, and linguine with meat sauce. And don’t even think about passing up the baklava."
Side Bar & Restaurant
"From chocolate-roasted stouts to happy IPA’s, you’ll always find a new beer to love at this downtown staple. The cosmopolitans are note-worthy, as are the $3 craft beers during happy hour."
"At Roots’ new location, dinner is prepared three nights a week, based on what’s available from CSA shares. Delicious, locally sourced dishes include a deviled-egg trio, chorizo meatballs, and smoked-trout carbonara."
Best Healthy Eating
Baco Juice & Taco Bar
"This hip new meeting spot serves smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, and hearty breakfast fare like quinoa porridge and house-made granola. There’s even a walk-up window. Try the signature Baco Juice – orange and carrot juices with ginger."
Mas Mexicali Cantina
"Already known for its killer margaritas and a pulsing roof deck, Mas has turned its focus on the food in recent months. The result is its new “Mexicali Fresh” concept, embodied in mixed taco trays that are perfect for sharing (or a big appetite). We’ve overindulged in the traditional shredded chicken – so juicy it’s downright sloppy – and the battered cod topped with Baja slaw."
Best Oyster Bar
Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House
"Whether you want ‘em “Noisy” (with Doc’s cocktail sauce and Blue Point Lager), on the half shell (with cocktail sauce and mignonette) or shooter style (in a shot glass with cocktail sauce and vodka), Doc’s has the remedy."
Kooma Modern Asian
"Simmered for hours, Kooma’s house-made broth is loaded with rice noodles, scallions and onions, and your choice of eye-of-round, meatballs, brisket or chicken. Experiment with a side plate of Asian basil, bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapeños and lime wedges, plus hoisin, Sriracha and chili sauces. Veggie options are also available."
Best Dresses for the Bride-to-Be
"Let’s face it: your wedding gown is just one of several dresses you’ll need for that buildup to the big day. Then there are the engagement photos, the bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner, the honeymoon … No worries. Tish has you covered."
Best Personalized Scents
"This all-natural apothecary is all about creating signature scents from essential oils mixed on-site. The homemade soaps are equally intoxicating, with ingredients such as seaweed, cucumber and organic tea-tree oil."
Best Place for Culinary Hostess Gifts
A Taste of Olive
"With so many artisanal regions represented—from Modena, Italy’s smooth balsamic, to the spicy oils of Málaga, Spain – sampling is encouraged at A Taste of Olive. You’ll also find seasoned sea salts, rubs and specialty foods."
Best Neighborhood Gym
Mitch’s Market Street Gym
"Long for a place where you can still compare notes with a workout buddy? Enter Mitch’s, with its neighborly vibe and high-tech equipment laid out on factory floors. Its dedicated staff includes university graduates trained in strength development, weight loss and body toning."
