Grant awarded for solar trash and recycling receptacles in downtown

August 30, 2013 | Malcolm Johnstone

BigBellyWest Chester, PA -- The Chester County Commissioners recently voted to approve the Borough of West Chester's $293,000 grant award for BigBelly solar trash and recycling receptacles to be placed in the Business Improvement District. The units will be installed in 2014.

Highlights of the program include:
1)  60 uniform solar compacting trash receptacles with accompanying recycling receptacles. This will be the first time the Borough has implemented a public recycling program in its downtown district. It should be noted that in a 2011 litter index, the Borough identified that 50-percent of the waste placed in the downtown litter baskets is recyclable material.

2)  Yearly cost and labor savings for the Borough.

3)  A network tracking system that has the ability to identify when to pick up public trash on an "on-demand basis."

4)  Providing a cleaner downtown by containing refuse and recyclables in fully enclosed receptacles, preventing overflowing refuse and keeping the refuse out-of-sight from pedestrians passing by.

5)  Each receptacle has the ability to have a design that can assist BID in branding the town as a clean and green community (one of the four points of the Main Street program).

The BID and the Borough Public Works Department would like to thank the County Commissioners and the Borough Council for their continued support of this project.
